Is Allen's new $60 million stadium too much for high school football?
posted at 3/30/2012 1:01 AM CDT on dallasnews.com

Last: 3/30/2012 Allen High School's new $59.6 million, 18,000-seat football stadium will feature a sunken-bowl design, two-tier press box, video scoreboard, weight room, wrestling practice room and an indoor area for golf practice in bad weather.

The stadium was part of a $119 million bond package voters approved in 2009. The bond package includes the stadium, a fine arts auditorium for the high school, and a district service center for maintenance, student nutrition and transportation.

Is it too much?

No. The tax payers footing the bill voted they wanted it. Their money.
Only gets up my nose when people spend other people's money they think they are entitled to.

Now the state is estaimating 23 million in budget cts to allen school and they may have to cut teachers jobs to stay afloat! The bond monney bu law cannot cover school wages. Only what they were intended for.

Not that it makes any difference to me but what about the people that voted against it. I'm sure not all tax payers wanted it. It's their money too. Just sayin'...

That's why they had a vote. I am sure they all had a chance to have their say even before the proposal went to a vote. I guess the option if they are unhappy enough about the way the majority voted is to move. Never going to have everyone agree about much of anything so how else to make decisions than to have a vote. They had the chance to convince the majority to agree with their position.

I agree with FB Fan. This is the democratic way. Majority wins!

But, I wonder how many that voted "Yea" in 2009 would vote otherwise today? Most every district in Texas had surplus and were spending $ like nothing else. Today? Couldn't squeeze a cent out of most. Just Sayin!

And I'm a bit jealous, too! If PLC would not of had a Superintendant on his way out, I would have thought we would have taken advantage of the economy and a good win streak to build ourselves a new stadium. Not $60 mil worth, but a good $10 mil would have went a long way to upgrading current Sandcrab Stadium.

But, timing is everything! And the smart get better when the gettin is good. And the rest just lag behind, I guess.

I can well imagine there is likely some buyer's remorse for some.

The stadium at Allen is not that amazing...Hope it doesn't rain much there, hate to swim up to the nose bleed seats. Allen FYI has the 5th highest gross per capita income as far as counties in Texas. I believe the average median income is a little over $180K...that's county wide so there must be some major moguls out there as everyone cannot be rich or well off. Think about it, they also have the 25th highest gross per capita income as far as counties in the United States! However, I know that some people who don't make a lot have to be upset at this 60M shrine when the ISD is struggling to keep teachers on budget. Personally, I don't care...not from Allen and don't think I've ever forgotten anything valuable there so I'm good. Only thing about such a stadium is that if/when you lose in it people tend to always throw that in your face.
